Earl Zaehler - Class Of 1960

Killed in Action--Republic of Vietnam on 10/27/1968

Earl was a 1st Lt, 101st Airborne, 501st Infantry, in US Army. He died of wounds received, while on a combat operation, when hit by fragments from a hostile booby trap."He was indeed a fine soldier." "He was such a fine outstanding officer and wonderful young man."Earl was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Bronze Star Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, The Air Medal, the Purple Heart, the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Silver Star Individual Award, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal.Note: In 1968, within 6 weeks, 3 former Boy Scouts were killed in Vietnam – Paul Presser (class of '63), Pfc, Marine Corps, then Tom Smoczynski (class of '62), Pfc, Army, then Earl. A sad time, indeed, for the St. Andrew Parish community.
